There is a never-ending list of tourist spots that everyone will tell you about including Central Park, Time Square, the Empire State and Upper East Side, etc. but that’s just scratching the surface. Every city has some hidden gems not easily discovered by tourists. Even some New Yorkians living in the city for years will be unaware of these secrets of New York.

So, looking for the hidden gems of New York? Or for those quirky things to do in NYC? You’ve come to the right place.

1. Grand Central Station’s Whispering Arch

While walking down towards the lower side of Grand Central Terminal, you will find an open secret spot worth seeing.

If you stand at one corner facing the arches and whisper, the other person standing at the opposite corner of the arch will hear your whispering clearly.

A bit quirky, but can be a cool trick to show a friend. Why not whisper a jokingly ominous threat to your friend amidst the busy crowd and see if they can hear you? (They will still be able to hear you!) Or what about asking a girl out for coffee? Kinda weird, I know, but the possibilities are endless with this one!

2. Glass Waterfall Tunnel

This is a beautiful waterfall tunnel that is situated on the side of the McGraw Hill building. It is merely a 3-minute walk from Time Square.

If you stand inside this tunnel, you’ll witness the mesmerizing sight of falling water over you. However, the water just stays inside the tunnel walls and you won’t get wet. Perfect spot for a photo if you ask me.

3. Pomander Walk

One of the most underrated secret spots in New York City, this place comes in hand if you’re a bit overwhelmed with all the modern-day digitalization, crowds and buildings. This hidden gem is your escape.

Pomander Walk is the sight of old England in New York City. It is a stark contrast to big glass and steel towers which represent New York City, and upon entering in this spot, you feel like you are walking into an English countryside. That’s right, take a deep breath…you can relax now.

4. UN Meditation Room

We told you we’d share some of the quirky things to do in NYC. The meditation room at the UN is open to the general public and is totally free. If you are interested in witnessing a…well, room…with a banal mural and a strange rectangular box in the middle, this is the place for you.

Basically, in this writers opinion, a bit of a hodgepodge and ecumenical mess, this meditation room is supposed to help you “escape into yourself” regardless of creed.

But, to be honest, I think what makes this a “hidden gem” is just how it illustrates how isolated some of the liberal social elites of America are. So stick that in your pipe and meditate on THAT. (Though, seriously, no smoking allowed in the meditation room).

There are numerous conspiracy theories surrounding this room, so it might be fun just to go check it out for that. Maybe you can crack the code?

What’s more, this UN building is basically an international territory, and so if you are in that building, then you cannot claim to be present in any country in the world.

5. Abandoned Smallpox Hospital

The attractive sight of this abandoned hospital is quite provocative. It is located on Roosevelt Island, and after the last inhabitants left this place, no one has ever come back here. It is not opened for the public to visit but you can get close to the outer part of the building, and it’s worth visiting.

If you dig a little into the secrets of New York and its history, you’ll find out that the city was the victim to smallpox a century ago.

6. The New York Earth Room

Picking back up on the theme of quirky, modern artist Walter De Maria, back in 1977, decided to “art” by dumping 280,000 pounds of soil into a 3,600-square-foot room.

The Dia Art Foundation loved the dirt so much that, in 1980, they permanently reinstalled it at 141 Wooster Street, New York. You can see it today. And yes, it’s the same original dirt.

So if you also like to “art” and like roomy Soho lofts filled with dirt, then you’ve found your spiritual home.

7. The Doyers Street Tunnel

In the 17^th Century, this street tunnel located in Chinatown was the escape route for those who wanted to flee from gangsters. Chinatown was a hub for smuggling, gambling, and fighting at the time. SO, this tunnel was a quick getaway for the runners.

This place was called “the bloody angle” back then, but now—rest assured—it is absolutely safe. One of the most recommended places to visit in this area is “Nam Wah tea parlor.”

8. Secret Apartment Of Radio City Music Hall

Radio City Music Hall is a well-known place called “the home of the Rockettes”. The tourists often go there to watch shows, but usually, they are not aware of a special secret of New York hidden inside. A secret chamber. Ok, not really…but kinda. It’s a secret apartment.

This place was built for a famous entrepreneur of the city named Samuel “Roxy” Rothafel who owned theaters in New York. Many famous actor/actresses used to visit him in this beautiful apartment featuring a 20-feet high ceiling. No one lived at this place after Roxy’s heart attack in 1936, and now it is used for events.

9. El Sabroso

In the industrial dock of Midtown, Manhattan there is a signboard with “El Sabroso” written over it. It is a Latin food place where you will find super delicious Latin cuisine. Food is the main part of your visit to any place in the world (or at least it is for me and my hungry stomach).

You can find the latest American cuisines in every corner of the city. However, most of them taste the same and if you want to try something new, visit this secret spot of NYC.

The freshly cooked lamb meat will satisfy your appetite just by looking at it (literally impossible, but I’ve got to make this sound amazing). Some people can’t find this amazing place because it’s tucked away from the main walkways. If you ever go looking for this place, head into the freight entrance at 265 West 37^th Street.

It’s highly rated and, in all honesty, has become more popular in recent years, but it’s still worth the visit.

10. The Cloisters

This might be the best secret spot in New York City. It’s basically a museum situated in Fort Tryon Park that is all about medieval European architecture and arts—with a special focus on the Gothic and Romanesque periods.

It almost feels like a magnificent European castle. Here you’ll get the chance of witnessing over 2,000 works and pieces from ancient Europe. If you are done with the hustle and bustle of city museums, then go to this secret spot. The breathtaking view of Rose Pink Garden and Cuxa Cloister inside the museum are sure to enhance your time here.

11. Sunshine Laundromat

Exploring the secret hidden gems of New York by yourself or with homies? Don’t miss this place. This is a bar located in one of the most hidden places in the city.

When you go to Sunshine Laundromat, don’t be phased if you can’t find anything else other than laundry machines and dirty clothes. Go inside the place and go behind the laundry area. Be confident.

You will see a left-alone dryer fixed at the ending point. Push the door, and here you go. You have entered the best place to do quirky things in NYC. There are many classic games and a limited edition pinball machines to enjoy (such as Medieval Madness). Forget the fancy gaming areas and cocktails and enjoy gaming with beer and wine.

It’s all pretty inexpensive so perfect if you’re visiting New York City on a budget.

Being a lot cheaper than Japan, however, this makes Jiufen a no-brainer for anyone wanting to experience Japan on a budget while near Southeast Asia.

About Jiufen, Taiwan

Jiufen is a mountain town in north Taiwan only 2 hours away from Taipei City, which makes it an ideal day trip if you’re in the area.

It was a mining town during the gold rush of the Japanese era up until the 1950s but, far from becoming a ghost town, its stunning view of the Pacific Ocean, tea houses, picturesque winding streets and vintage Japanese feel, made it a popular destination for Taiwanese and travelers.

In fact, the Japanese feel is so strong that its connection with the Japenese film, Spirited Away, cannot be ignored.

But Jiufen Taiwan has more than just one film going for it. The winner of the 1989’s Golden Lion film award, A City of Sadness, was filmed here too.

Jiufen is quite small, with only about 3,000+ inhabitants. Being a mountain town, its roads are narrow, curvy and steep. Some things you might expect to find, such as a bank, you will not find here. So bring essentials with you and don’t rely on finding it within Jiufen.

Why Is Jiufen Cheaper Than Japan?

Japan, as a whole, is quite a bit more expensive than Taiwan.

Transportation Cost

Transportation in Japan is expensive,  with a single train journey alone (e.g. from Tokyo to Osaka) setting you back around $140, whereas in Taiwan the equivalent would only set you back by around $25.

Many of the local trains from Taipei (the capital city) to surrounding areas won’t be much more than $12. Whereas the metro system in Taipei itself is also cheap, with 10 days metro use costing this blogger just $3.60.

To save money traveling around Taiwan use local trains and the metro when in cities like Taipei.

Food Cost

Moreover, food in Japan is generally more expensive than in Taiwan. Not because Japan’s food is particularly expensive, but because Taiwanese street food is so cheap due to the many night markets. We recommend eating Taiwan’s street food over restaurants because, first of all, we find them to be safer (less likely to get food poisoning!), and secondly, because it is SO much cheaper.

Most street food dishes are around $1 or $2, so you can’t go wrong with that price. Best of all, it’s more authentic and what the locals do themselves.

Accommodation Cost

Accommodation usually costs a fair amount in Japan and, even if you are lucky enough to find a budget hotel, in comparison to Taiwan, you’ll be forking out more to spend the night.

You can find some great Airbnbs within Taipei for as low as $25 per night.

How Do I Get To Jiufen From Taipei?

1. Train

Go to Taipei Main Station (台北車站) and take the train north to Ruifang Station (瑞芳) for around NT$60 / $2. Then, exit Riufang Station, facing the “wellcome” supermarket, go straight and turn left onto Mingdeng Road.

Walk about 5 minutes/200 meters looking out for a police station, next to it is a bus stop called Local Residents Plaza (區民廣場) with the Keelung Bus 788 and 827 heading toward Jiufen. It’ll cost you about NT$20 / 50¢ to board. Stay on the bus until the last stop since it’ll drop you off near(ish) to Jiufen’s Old Street.

Once out of Riufang Station go straight and turn left onto the street in front of you. Cross the street and walk down for about 5 minutes or so until you reach a bus station. We were slightly unsure of which bus to take, so we asked the bus driver before we hopped on (I believe it was Keelung Bus 788, but double check the schedule). Stay on the bus until the last stop, which will drop you off a few minutes away from Jiufen Old Street. The train ticket is around NT$60 and the bus ticket is around NT$20.

2. Bus

A direct bus (the 965) leaves Banqiao Bus Station in the Banqiao district of New Taipei City and takes about 80 minutes to get there. One way, this ticket will cost you about NT$90 / $2.90 and leaves 6AM – 9PM on weekdays and 7AM – 9PM on weekends and holidays.

Alternatively, make your way to Zhongxiao Fuxing Station ((忠孝復興) at the intersection of the Brown and Blue line, and leave Exit 2. From outside the Sogo department store, you’ll be able to take the Keelung Bus 1062 to Jinguashin. (It says Junguashin, but it’ll take you to Jiufen, so no need to worry!)

This bus ticket will cost you NT$100 / $3.30 and the bus journey will take about 60 minutes, so get a good seat to spot the views!

3. Car

Of course, if money is less of a concern, you could just rent a car for the day from either IWS Car Rental or Chailease Auto Rental. The drive will take about 45 to 60 minutes.

What Is There To Do In Jiufen?

1. Jiu Fen Old Street

Be transported back into a different world by visiting the bustling old streets of Jiufen. It’ll feel like old Taiwan and old Japan all at once, and is located near Keelung’s coast with gorgeous sea views.

There are 4 streets of notable significance for you to check out: Jishan Street (particularly packed on weekends or holidays), Jianci Road, Cingbian Road, and Ciche Road.

Slow down, people watch, take it all in, and try and snap that perfect photo of hanging lanterns and Japanese-style decorations. It’ll feel like a different world!

There is also great food here too.

On the packed old streets of Jiufen there are vendors offer all kinds of Taiwanese foods such as hot or cold Taro Balls, Green tea balls, Hongzao meatballs, rice cakes, and much more. Definitely try the Taro Balls, which is popular all over Taiwan but was first created here in Jiufen in the 1940s.

Good places to grab a bite include A-Zhu Peanut Ice Cream Roll, Grandma Lai’s Yu Yuan and Ah Gan Yi Yu Yuan.

2. Do A Night Tour

If you’re the sort of person who dislikes crowds then a night tour of Jiufen may be perfect for you. You’ll get to see Jiufen in all its glory during the night and the atmosphere will be different.

Quite a few people think you can complete Jiufen in just one afternoon, but that is a mistake. Sometimes people regret not staying overnight in Jiufen and end up coming back again.

So starting your Jiufen trip with a night tour and then staying at one of the amazing guesthouses (e.g. Shanhaiguan Guesthouse / 九份山海观民宿) overnight so you can wake up bright and early to experience Jiufen in the morning is a fantastic idea!

A night tour with Klook around the night markets of Jiufen, Shifen and Keelung Miaokow would also be a great choice.

3. Visit A Tea House

Throughout the Old Street of Jiufen (though, in turn, its more like an alley) are a scattering of teahouses—squashed, hidden, and delicately placed in the middle of shops and buildings that are well worth the visit.

There is A Mei teahouse decorated with masks reminiscent of Spirited Away. Expect to hear Japenese. The author (Hayao Miyazaki) can deny Jiufen’s inspiration in the Japanese fantasy film all he wants, but this won’t stop the tourists due to the Studio Ghibli memorabilia found throughout the town.

The menu of A Mei teahouse offers a wide selection of beverages, teas and desserts. Pricey but tasty, and worth the experience.

Another teahouse of note is the Skyline teahouse. Offering pristine views of the coast and nearby mountains, this oolong-selling traditional teahouse also sells traditional Taiwanese snacks.

4. Hike Keelung Mountain (基隆山)

If just walking down the twisting, steep roads of Jiufen doesn’t satisfy your hiking needs, then a hike up Keelung Mountain is a must-do. At 588 meters high, it’s quite a challenge for newbies and will take about 2 hours in total for travel times from Jiufen and to complete it.

If you’re looking for how to get to Jiufen from Keelung to do this hike, simply either take a taxi or, alternatively, make your way to Jiu Dao station by taking the 基隆客運 KL bus from Keelung train station, or the 825 bus from Ruifang train station.

5. Check Out Shengping Theater

If movies and Baroque architecture is your thing, you ought to check out Shengping Theater.

Built in the early 1900s the theater is the oldest existing theater in Taiwan. Renovated and reopened in 2011, this theater now gives locals a chance to re-live childhood memories watching classic Taiwanese films and operas.

So go and check out an old Taiwanese movie and connect with the movie-history of Taiwan.

The Best Time To Visit Jiufen

If you’re going just to shop then the best time to visit Jiufen Taiwan is late morning.

If you’re going for the ambiance, experience and mood then this is best in the early morning and evening. (And, like mentioned above, spending the night is highly recommended).

What Should I Buy In Jiufen?

If you’re looking to try Taiwanese delicacies then you definitely should taste the Ah Gan Yee’ Yam Ball (阿甘姨芋圆). A warm soup (which will be nice at this colder mountain altitude anyway). We also recommend asking for the mixed version which is red peppers, yam balls in a green bean soup.

If you’re looking to bring something home with you then good souvenirs include cups, bags, fans, plushy teddies, and lots of silk products—the embroidery on these silks are excellent and will make a great gift.

A recommended tea to order in teahouses would be Jin Xuan Oolong Tea (金宣茶).

A Day Trip To Shifen

Nearby to Jiufen, another day trip worth doing from Taipei is Shifen. You can either spend a few days in Jiufen and go to Shifen as well or do it separately from Jiufen altogether.

Possessing its own Old Street, Shifen also features the broadest waterfall in Taiwan, Shifen Waterfalls.

A Day Trip To Jinguashi

Another worthy day trip is the mining town of Jinguashi, again not far from Jiufen.

Featuring one of the hardest hikes in Northern Taiwan called Teapot Mountain (茶壺山), Jinguashi also contains the Gold Museum which looks at Taiwan’s fascinating gold mining history, and also the Golden Waterfall which, although not flowing in gold, is an extraordinary scene of nature and definitely worth visiting.

1. Dominican Republic

If you’re looking for where is hot and cheap in March, the Dominican Republic is it. With average daily temperatures of about 26°C / 79°F in Punta Cana, the city at the easternmost tip of the Dominican Republic.

It is basically the best of the Carribean for cheap with incredible beaches around the towns of Cabarete, Samaná and the island of Cayo Levantado. Other fantastic places to visit include Santo Domingo, which was founded by Bartholomew Columbus in 1496 and is the oldest inhabited European settlement in the Americas.

2. Mexico

With an average temperature of 25°C / 77°F in March in the city of Cancun (located in its easternmost side), Mexico has SO much to offer in terms of cheap fun in the sun.

From incredible beaches such as Tulum, Cancun, or Playa del Carmen, to wondrous sights such as the Yucatán Peninsula or the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, there is a huge range of things to do.

Another thing: the food.

The hottest month of the year in Southeast Asia is April so March really is an ideal time to visit. For example, the average temperature for Bangkok during March is around 30°C / 86°F.

Known for being ridiculously cheap, you can sleep in double rooms with a fan for about $7–$10 per night, dorm beds for about $4-$7, and quite luxurious hotels for only around $70.

You average street food meal will cost you around $1-$2, with nicer restaurants costing about $2–$7 per person.

Also, Thailand has so much to offer from its many islands, great beaches, scenery, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, National Parks, and super cities such as Chiang Mai.

4. Philippines

Pretty much everything that has been said about Thailand above can also be applied to the Philippines. It is a little bit cooler than Thailand in March with average daily temperatures in Manila being around 28°C / 82°F, but this might actually suit some people.

The benefit of the Philippines is that they usually have cheaper domestic flights on offer, meaning you can explore it more for cheap. The Philippines also pips Thailand in terms of natural beauty and scenery.

5. Laos

Another Southeast Asian country that has warm weather in March, the average daily temperature in Vientiane (Lao’s capital city) is around 29°C / 84°F.

Lao has been dubbed Asia’s “sleeping beauty” and is known for its coffee culture, green surroundings, gorgeous sunsets (see picture above), waterfalls, and great food.

There are many interesting things to do, such as taking the slow boat, visiting the charming little town of Luang Prabang (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the slice of heaven that is Vang Vieng (pictured), the Plain Of Jars, and so much more.

6. Nepal

In Kathmandu, Nepal‘s capital, the average daily temperature sits around 26°C / 79°F, making it another great option if you’re thinking about where can I go on holiday in March that’s hot.

Nepal is rugged, untamed, beautiful and is a wonderful place to visit if you like hikes. But hikes isn’t all it has to offer, from jungle walks to biking, rafting, kayaking, and seeing the Himalayas, Nepal is a great option for adrenalin junkies who want to visit somewhere completely new and fresh.

7. Brazil

Huge, colorful and vibrant, Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro is around 26°C / 79°F during March—the same as Kathmandu in Nepal. So not too hot, but not too cold either!

Whether it be dancing Brazilian style, checking out great sights such as Iguaçu Falls, Christ the Redeemer, Corcovado, Sugarloaf Mountain, or seeing why their beaches are to die for, or relishing in the fact that Brazilians love tourists, you won’t get bored.

After all, it’s such a big country (the 5^th largest in the world) that there are a plethora of things to do. And, moreover, great things to do on a budget! Like all the other countries in this post, Brazil is surprisingly affordable.

You can have nice Brazilain breakfasts at local cafés for about $2.50-$8 and taking the subway is your cheapest way to get around costing only about $1. Of course, prices vary depending on where you go and what you do, but with a bit of planning Brazil can turn out to be one of the best places to go on holiday in March!

8. Tenerife (Spain)

One of the best places to visit in March in Europe (well, at least culturally Europe), Tenerife is actually a Spanish island with an average daily temperature of 20°C / 67°F that lies just off Northwest Africa.

Bursting with marine life from orcas to bottlenosed dolphins and sperm whales, you’ll have lots to do if you love the sea and diving. Also, the Catalan and traditional Spanish cuisine only enhance the experience of sitting in the sun and enjoying the sea.

On that note: Tenerife is known for being sunny all year round so, in March, it’ll be a safe bet and a cheap escape since flights to Tenerife can often be ridiculously low (at least if you’re flying from Europe).

Basically, if you’re based somewhere in Europe right now and wondering where you can go on holiday in March that’s hot, Tenerife is a great option since it isn’t too geographically far away from Europe and, in a sense, is in Europe since it’s a Spanish island and so feels quite European.

The unique blend of Arabic, Berber, and French culture in Morocco will charm you, and if you’re an architecture buff, you’ll LOVE Morocco. From the Mosques to the tombs built for royalty, to even great archeological sites, Morocco boasts so many interesting spots for architecture.

Check out Chefchaouen, the blue painted town, or trek the Atlas mountains, or go on a desert tour. If you’re looking to travel on a budget, then check out the city of Fes—which tends to be cheaper than Marrakesh.

Activities

The amount of activities you can do at La Mauricie is incredible. No matter the season, there are always things to do. One of the things I very much appreciate about Canadians is that they get excited for winter just like most embrace the start of summer! In winter, you can ski, fat bike, ice-climb, fish, and my personal favorite, dog sledding. The best part of the experience is meeting your crew of huskies! They are very friendly! You can either sit back and enjoy the ride or get right into the mix and drive the sled yourself. Either way, it is a great introduction to what Canada is all about. As the weather starts to get warmer, La Mauricie is known for canoe camping. The park does not allow motorized boats in the water so it is probably the cleanest water you’ll ever touch. The park is made up of various islands so you can spend a weekend or more going from spot to spot and enjoying the great outdoors. Whatever you are looking for, La Mauricie has it and then some.

Hiking

The hikes within La Mauricie are so spectacular that it deserves its very own category. You simply cannot come to La Mauricie without doing at least one hike. There are plenty of hikes to choose from for all levels. No matter if you want to test your hiking skills or just take a leisurely stroll through the forest. In my opinion, there are a few trails worth exploring. Voted one of the best trails in Québec by Explore Magazine, Les Deux Criques is a 15.3 kilometers (9.5 miles) trail for advanced hikers. The trail’s views are stunning especially in fall when all of the leaves start turning colors and the forest is filled with shades of orange and red. You’ll pass by lakes, waterfalls, but you will be hiking up a hill for a good portion of it so be ready with hiking boots.

Another trail that is absolutely worth checking out is called Les Cascades. This trail is more for leisure hikers and is best to go in the summer. Its big highlight is the waterfall at the end of the hike. Think about it as a reward for your efforts! It’s a fantastic place for a late afternoon picnic and since the water is fresh, it’s a great spot to take a refreshing dip in the water and then dry off on the rocks. Speaking of waterfalls, if you are feeling adventurous and do end up renting a canoe, you can make the journey over to Waber Falls. I’d recommend getting a canoe for the whole entire day because it is impossible to canoe and enjoy the waterfalls in a 4-hour timespan. Whichever trail(s) you end up choosing at La Mauricie, you will be greeted with stunning views. Another bonus is that, since the park is not on most people’s travel radars, it’s less crowded than other national parks in the province and across Canada.

Camping

As previously mentioned, canoe camping is one of the best summer activities that you can do in the park. That being said, there are a plethora of options to choose from. As I’ve done quite a bit of camping in the park, I feel like I can give you a solid rundown of what spots are worth checking out. First off, if you only have time for one area, I highly recommend heading directly to the Wapizagonke area. It is home to some of the best camping spots in the whole park. There’s no better way to wake up than looking out over the lake and breathing in the fresh air! Be sure to get up early at sunrise and go canoe around the lake. You’ll be by yourself in nature as the fog lifts and the sun rises. It is a magical experience! For those that truly want to have a Canadian experience, you can even camp in the winter in this section.

Of course, if you do not want to do canoe camping, you can still do any traditional camping. If you are a visitor and do not have any camping equipment, have no fear! Parks Canada recently built all new lodging called oTENTik. They are small wood lodges that can accommodate up to 6 people and come fully equipped for an authentic camping experience. There are over 400 across the whole entire national park system with over 20 in La Mauricie that can be rented by the night. Whether it be canoe or traditional camping, you’ll be able to share some incredible photos with your friends and soon they will be wanting to come see La Belle Province!

For example, Brighton is famous for its beautiful pebble beaches, quaint little shopping lanes and vibrant nightlife.

There’s also a lot of unique sights, such as the oldest aquarium in the world (built in 1872) or the Royal Pavilion, a Grade 1 listed palace that might make you question whether you’re in England or India.

So if you fancy some fish and chips on a grade II listed pier in one of the friendliest places in the South, then Brighton is one of those “must-do” day trips from London.

Trains from London are quick and frequent. Leave from London Victoria station and you can be on the beach in under an hour.

When you picture a University life in England, you may well be picturing Oxford. The old buildings, the libraries, the academics strolling around in their robes. It all still happens in Oxford. As a result, this small but perfectly formed city is a wonderful place to spend a day punting on the river Cherwell, strolling about the Covered Market and having a pint in a local pub.

Catch a train from Paddington station which should be easy as they leave every 5 to 10 minutes. With a journey time of just over an hour until you’re in some beautiful Oxfordshire countryside.

One of the best day trips from London for people who love English royalty. Known for its royal connections, Windsor is a small but picturesque town just West of London. It claims to fame is the opulent Windsor Castle, which is the largest inhabited castle in the world and still used as a residence by the Royal Family.

Hint: If the Royal Standard is flying, it means the Queen is at home and definitely wants you to pop in for a cup of tea and a biscuit.

If her majesty is not at home, you can still take a tour of the house and watch the Changing of the Guard at 11am most Mondays to Saturdays. Or you can head away from the Castle into the beautiful Windsor Great Park for some serious picnicking and red deer spotting. Of course, there is always the option for souvenir shopping in one of the many central shops.

No matter how you look at it, you’re guaranteed a lovely day out!

There are a rich plethora of “commuter towns” around London and for the most part, they are convenient more than they are interesting. Guildford is a little different in that it is definitely used by many of its residents to travel to London each day, but it is also an interesting and vibrant place in its own right.

Dating back to Saxon times, this busy little market town is peppered with old buildings, delicious restaurants, riverside walks and to top it all off, a castle said to be built sometime around 1066. It’s much quieter than some of the larger cities and towns on this list and so can be an excellent snapshot of English life in a southern town.

Its close location to the nature spots like Pewley Down or Newlands Corner, mean you are on the doorstep of some truly outstanding English countryside.

35 minutes on the train from London Waterloo and it’s just a 5-minute walk from the station to the cobbled high street.

5. Winchester—for fans of King Arthur

On the edge of the South Downs National Park, Winchester is a seething hotbed of historical landmarks. Not only does it boast one of the most beautiful Cathedrals, but it also has a 17^th Century Library, the ruins of Wolvesey Castle and a working 18^th Century Corn Mill.

But it’s Winchester Castle which might get most history buffs interested, as within it’s great hall can be found what is reported to be King Arthur’s Round Table. That’s right, proudly displayed in the 13^th Century aisled hall, is a living piece of medieval mythology. And only 10 minutes away from Winchester station.

Even if you’re not a history buff, you can still spend a happy day pottering around Winchester’s many boutique shops and enjoying a tea or tipple in one of its many cafés and restaurants. It’s many international eateries showcase a modern city in a historic setting. A little bit of everything for everyone.

Trains to Winchester run from London Waterloo and take around an hour on average. It’s worth noting that the station is about 10-minute walk to the center but it’s a beautiful walk which is well worth the effort.

I recommend going rogue and renting a motorbike to explore all of the harder to reach spots. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at the prices. Food, rent, and entertainment are all a third of what they would be back home.

Thailand is just waiting for you to explore its beautiful varied regions.

4. Indonesia

Unfortunately, Indonesia has recently been in the news for natural disasters that have pounded the island country. Now, it’s even more important to go visit the country and support it any way you can.

Many opt to go to Bali, but since you are a real trekker, you’re more likely to go off the beaten path to a spot like Maluku Islands or Tanjung Puting National Park.

Considering you can eat like a king for only $7 USD or go on a full day trip to go see endangered Orangutans, I’d say Indonesia is a great, warm weather country that’ll make your money go far.

5. Argentina

I bet you weren’t expecting to see Argentina on this list, but considering that summer is coming and the exchange rates are quite favorable at the moment, it’s a great time to go explore all that the country has to offer.

While the Argentine Peso is lower than usual, it’s a nice time to go visit the Patagonia region and do some incredible hikes.

Of course, no trip to Argentina would be complete without first visiting the Paris of South America (Buenos Aires). With its small streets, incredible street art, and delicious food, Argentina is a great fall or winter getaway.

6. South Africa

Speaking of warm Southern Hemisphere destinations, South Africa is a country that’s becoming more and more popular among travelers. The country has big cities, nature, lively culture, and tons of history.

In terms of prices, it’s actually one of the cheapest in Africa. This is due to the fact that other countries on the continent have converted their prices to USD whereas South Africa has kept their currency.

It goes without saying that the wildlife in South Africa is pretty incredible all around, but especially in places such as Kruger National Park.

Moreover, there are great opportunities for hiking with Table Mountain or the Cape of Good Hope, and also wonderful beaches such as Boulders Beach that features a penguin colony!

Take advantage of South Africa’s affordability before the secret is out.

7. United Arab Emirates

When you think of Dubai and the United Arab Emirates, what do you think of? If oppressive heat comes to mind then you’re not far off! Luckily, October is when the temperatures start to drop to a more reasonable average (around 86°F/ 30°C).

In terms of cost, you might think of Ferraris driving around Dubai, but for a visitor, the costs are pretty reasonable. A good meal should set you back about $15 USD and a museum pass costs about $1 USD.

There are also some colossus feats of architecture in the United Arab Emirates. From impressive mosques to palaces, you’ll be constantly admiring the architecture.

Being closer to the desert too also adds the benefit of opening up more opportunities for thrill-seekers. Go on a desert safari tour in the Liwa Desert, try some dune driving, or see the desert by quad bike. Maybe even try sandboarding. (Yes, that is a thing!)

If you can, try to avoid Abu Dhabi or Dubai to cut down on costs and get a more local view of this incredible country.

8. Portugal

This Mediterranean country is now on many travelers bucket list and is one of the best warm European countries to escape the cold.

I remember when I visited in 2014 and many of my friends were confused about why I would go to Portugal and not Spain first…I changed their minds when I came back with some incredible pictures of Portugal!

This country has every modern comfort and is easily accessible from the rest of Europe and North America (5 hours flight from the East Coast of the US and Canada.)

Portugal has a bit of everything too: castles, beaches, mountains, beautiful scenery, lakes, cool cities, and great architecture. You’ll get that vintage European feel while basking in the warmth and not breaking the bank.

9. Croatia

With daily highs in fall of 72°F/ 22°C and lows of 59°F/ 15°C, fall or winter is an ideal time of the year for a vacation in Croatia. It also is way less crowded than in the warmer summer months. With fewer visitors means cheaper prices for tours and other tourist related activities.

Be sure to take advantage of great deals on cruises around the Croatian coast and check out some of the islands. Croatia really has some of the best beaches Europe can offer!

But not to forget to also mention, with it being a Balkan country, it offers more than just Mediterranean culture. You really feel something different and unique here.

It’s also a diverse country in that it offers many opportunities for adventurous types. Go check out the wonderful national parks such as Plitvice Lakes National Park, or try hiking, diving, snorkeling, or sailing.

As you can see from the photo above too, there are so many beautiful towns in Croatia! You won’t be short of options to explore.

Note: Although one of the warm countries in Europe, depending on which part of the country you’re in, Croatia can start to get a little bit cooler in deep winter…but only very rarely will drop below 41°F/ 5°C.

10. Bolivia

This South American country is often seen as a pass over for many going to visit Peru, but you are missing so much by not spending time exploring Bolivia.

Sure, it’s not as cheap as people originally assume, but you can easily live as comfortably for way less than back home.

Be sure to take one of the cheapest jungle tours on the continent, but be wary there are many shady companies. La Paz is also a lovely city to spend some time and has a large expat community.

Sucre is a city in the southern highlands that has a subtropical climate meaning its hot in the summer and not too cold in the winter.

The Historic City of Sucre with its incredibly well-preserved 16^th Century churches like Santo Domingo and San Lázaro showcase a blending of old-world European architecture and new-world American architecture. This is part of the reason why the History City of Sucre is actually a UNESCO world heritage site!

With it also being the prettiest city in Bolivia, I’d say its a good option to visit!

Bolivia is one of those warm countries that deserve to be a part of your next trip.

Warmer climates are usually more enjoyable for people, so there is something to be said in believing that mental health can improve by spending some time in a warmer climate.

Definitely not.

Let’s take a look at ten places to visit in Winter where both experiences and true value can be found:

1. Banff – Alberta, Canada

Banff may be somewhat of a tourist town and the hotels might be a little expensive but the truth is, this can also be one of the cheapest places to visit in Winter. After all, you don’t need to stay in Banff itself and Calgary is just a short drive away where you will find many affordable options for accommodation.

Located in the middle of a glorious National Park, Banff is admittedly a touristy town but once you venture into the mountains, everything opens up. In other words, you can feel alone and one with nature up here and this is certainly true when driving between the immense snow-capped peaks.

Just up the road, you have Lake Louise and Moraine Lake while the waterfalls and walkways of Johnston are a suitable option for a leisurely stroll even in spite of the snow.

Needless to say, Banff is known as one of the most beautiful Winter destinations for good reason but you don’t have to ski, snowboard or stay at fancy hotels to witness this majestic wonderland.

2. Slovenia – Europe

Slovenia is fast becoming one of the premier hiking destinations in the world. However, this is also an incredibly cheap place to travel in Winter and Lake Bled is arguably the hidden gem that you need to uncover.

Located in the middle of the Julian Alps, Lake Bled has a beautiful little island where equally small houses and a church make up a delightful community. Life seems to stand still here and for many people, it can feel like a step back to a time when life was a lot more simple.

With a pristine yet frosty lake, the scenery is nothing short of breath-taking at this time of year. What’s more, there is a ski resort close to the lake but nearby Vintgar Gorge is another option, where visitors can visit pools, caves and waterfalls, at absolutely no cost!

3. Iceland

Okay, Iceland is super expensive and there’s no denying that the hotels and restaurants are overpriced. But when you factor in the ridiculously low cost of airfare, you’ve already made up the difference on the accommodation.

More importantly, most of the “activities” in Iceland are outdoors and as a rule, completely free. That is to say, most people venture outdoors on one of the many hiking trails and there’s no cost or fees involved with any of these areas.

As mentioned, WOW Air and Iceland Air are offering insanely good deals to the island and if you opt for hostels over hotels, this incredible destination can be a reasonably cheap option for Winter.

4. Krakow – Poland

You can visit many stunning outdoor regions and attractions from Krakow such as the Zakopane mountains or Wieliczka Salt Mines. However, there is also Auschwitz concentration camps nearby which is the most visited landmark by visitors to Poland.

Either way, there is so much to do when you stay in Krakow and the city is extremely vibrant during Winter. For example, on the main square you can find the Winter markets where hearty food and mulled wine is served for no less than two whole months.

What’s more, Krakow is one of the cheapest places to visit in Winter and you are sure to leave having received more than enough value for your investment.

5. Jackson Hole – Wyoming, United States

While most ski enthusiasts will opt for Aspen or Lake Tahoe for the winter months, Jackson Hole is often a much better and cheaper destination. Situated in Grand Teton National Park, Jackson Hole is a stunning valley which receives a very healthy and reliable dose of snow each year.

As for the actual ski resort, this is may not have the glamour of other famous resorts in America but in recent years, it has become just as popular.

Surrounded by rugged mountains and blessed with a beautiful little town, Jackson Hole also features some fantastic bars and places to eat some wholesome warm meals at the end of the day.

6. Stockholm – Sweden

As with Iceland, the cost of living is quite high in Sweden and many tourist attractions are priced accordingly. However, there are still affordable options in Stockholm and you can travel to Sweden for next to nothing from almost any corner of the world.

For example, round trips from the east coast of either Canada or the United States are typically priced less than $350. As if that’s not enough, during Winter, you can find excellent prices on hotels in Stockholm with many top class options for less than $100.

Needless to say, the infamous Northern lights and stunning vistas make this one of the greatest places to visit in Winter, and this is especially true for those who venture up north on a road trip.

7. Chicago – United States

We all know that New York is one of the most exciting and popular places to travel during Winter. At the same time, we also know it’s super expensive. With this in mind, Chicago offers an inexpensive alternative.

The truth is, flights to Chicago are much cheaper than New York and the same can be said for hotels. More importantly, Chicago can also be a bit of a Winter Wonderland at this time of year and can be a truly atmospheric city to explore.

Even though there are many attractions such as the Shedd Aquarium or the Art Institute, this is a fantastic city to indulge in some bargain basement shopping and the endless cheap eats around town.

8. Berlin – Germany

Berlin is another great place to visit in Winter and extremely cheap to reach from most parts of the world. In fact, if you find a decent airfare, this can be an incredibly cheap option as the cost of living is relatively low here.

Hotels should be priced for less than $100 and attractions such as the Planetarium of National History Museum only require a small entry fee.

That being said, the best thing about Berlin is to explore the many historic sites around the city from World War II. From the famous Berlin Wall to Brandenburg Gate, there are many remnants of the war and most of them are entirely free.

9. Newfoundland – Canada

Most people head off to Whistler or the above mentioned Banff during the winter months, but Newfoundland offers a very different experience. That is to say, you will not find tourist crowds or busy attractions in Newfoundland. Instead, this charming landmass offers encounters with nature and incredibly friendly locals.

As if that’s not enough, Newfoundland is slightly more affordable than mainland Canada and flights to St. Johns are usually quite cheap. In case you might be asking yourself, this is because St Johns is a common stopover for flights traveling from North America to Europe and vice-versa. Hence, you will often find cut-price deals from anywhere in either destination.

10. Edinburgh – Scotland

As you know, London is highly expensive but if you take a trip up north to Scotland, Edinburgh offers one of the best places to visit in Winter. In fact, Edinburgh is more popular during Winter than at any other time of year.

Featuring a stunning castle and a beautiful medieval center, this is a great city in which to take a stroll but also to explore the surroundings. After all, you can take a day tour to from Edinburgh to Loch Ness, home of the notorious Loch Ness Monster.

Alternatively, there are also trips to be taken into the mountains where nature lovers are sure to be impressed by some of the most rugged, unspoiled landscapes in the world.

Interestingly, this is also where many scenes from Game of Thrones were filmed so fans of the television series can visit the north and see that the legends are true—Winter is Coming!

As you can see, even some of the more expensive destinations can be visited on a rather small budget.

2. Vienna, Austria

If you like mulled wine, sweets and delicious Austrian sausages, then you need to pack your trousers with the elasticated waistband and head to Vienna this December.

Here you can enjoy a plethora of festive food in one of the safest destinations in Europe. This means you’ll feel totally free to wander about the city, gazing at the lights, trees and nativity scenes.

While you’re wandering can be totally random, do make sure to potter over to the City Hall Square as this area becomes “Vienna Magic of Advent” and is beautifully transformed into a fairytale style scene.

3. Zagreb, Croatia

Now to a city you may not necessarily associate with Christmas.

If you think of Zagreb in Croatia, you might be thinking of hot sunny days, ice creams and stunning architecture. You might not be thinking twinkling lights, hot steaming food and Christmas choirs. However, if you head there in Wintertime, that’s exactly what you’ll get.

4. Manchester, England

It would be a sin to compile a list of Christmas markets and not include the first ever UK based one. First arriving at British shores in 1999, Manchester’s Christmas markets have really set the standard for the rest of the UK. And set them high at that.

Over 300 stalls pop up around the city center offering crafts, jewelry, leather goods and, of course, food. Lots and lots of food.

Plus if you head over to Cathedral Gardens you can have a go on the massive fairground that is erected there. Nothing says festive like a go on a Waltzer.

Sure, you could go to one in London. But as it’s argued that folk are friendly up north (and it’s universally agreed that it’s cheaper), why miss the opportunity for a bit of northern Christmas cheer?

5. Seville, Spain

Ok, so you’re the sort of person who loves Christmas but also loves warm weather. What on earth are you to do? We know.

You need to get on a plane this instant and fly over to Seville (assuming you’re reading this at Christmas time).

This Spanish beauty is not only full of gorgeous old buildings and happy smiling people. It also plays host to beautiful Christmas markets set under a shining sun. Delicately made crafts are a specialty here.

6. Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen may be famous for its Danish bacon but it’s not just bacon you’ll feast on if you visit Denmark’s capital at Christmas. Freshly made doughnuts dipped in hot chocolate, mulled wine, and more are all available at Tivoli Gardens. (Or, as it’s otherwise known, the city’s number one Christmas Market.)

7. Tallinn, Estonia

Are you someone who feels the post-Christmas blues? Wish it could go on just a little bit longer? Do you always try to eek out just a little more Christmas cheer?

Well, good news!

The Russian Orthodox Church states that January 7^th is actually Christmas day and that means that for the Estonian capital, Tallinn, Christmas markets continue well into the new year.

You can use all that extra time to enjoy some traditional Estonian Christmas classics. Such as black pudding and sour cabbage! …Or maybe just look at the enormous Christmas tree set up in Tallinn Town Square. It was the first ever to be displayed in Europe after all.

Is it any wonder that Santa Claus himself is rumored to have opened the very first Christmas market in Tallinn?

8. Dresden, Germany

Ok let’s get properly traditional now.

Set in Altmarkt Square, the Striezelmarkt has been delighting visitors since 1434. So it would be rude not to include it on this list, especially given Germany’s stellar reputation for creating some truly amazing Christmas Markets.

Visitors here are free to enjoy an authentic glass of Gluhwein whilst listening to the concerts and choirs providing entertainment in one of the many churches. Or maybe you’d prefer to watch the boats dusted with Christmas lights, twinkling their way down the Elbe.

9. Budapest, Hungary

Everything you normally enjoy at a Christmas Market is available in Budapest. The wine, the crafts, the lights, the slight gassiness after eating too many treats.

But what you don’t get at other Christmas markets is a 3D light show. Displayed on the side of St Stephen’s Basilica, this frankly modern twist gives a cutting-edge feel to a traditionally rustic event.

Of course, all this is to be enjoyed with a glass of wine and a slice of chimney cake or kürtőskalács, as it’s known by locals. This deliciously conical sweet is made by wrapping cake dough around a pole, baking it and then dusting in frankly obscene amounts of sugar and cinnamon.

10. Brussels, Belgium

Finally the last on our list is a biggun.

The “Winter Fun” festival is a spectacular event spread out across the city. With over 200 chalets serving up all the traditional fayre, an ice skating rink, a ferris wheel, merry go rounds and a light and sound show. All centered around a huge Christmas tree and of course lots and lots of Christmas lights.

What more could you want? What’s that? A Christmas Parade? Oh, go on then. Of course there’s one of them too!

Is this all a little overwhelming? Don’t worry there are guided tours of the festival for daunted yet excited English speakers, so you’ll feel right at home.
